Advancing Creative Communities

In the spirit of re:con 2023 – Community, Connection, and Storytelling, we have assembled an exhibition of artwork from Incompass Michigan member art studio programs.

These studios stretch from Detroit to Lansing to Kalamazoo. Each studio is unique in its philosophy and practice, but they all share a commitment to supporting the production and display of art by artists who face barriers to community access and inclusion. This exhibition presents artwork from five studios, artWorks (MRC Industries), Art from the Heart (Peckham, Inc.), Artisan Corner (Work Skills Corporation), Creative Expressions (Gesher Human Services), and Progressive Art Studio Collective (PASC) (Services to Enhance Potential). Each of these programs is displaying selected artworks by 1-5 artists in their program. But this is by no means the limit of these studios’ output. Most programs have anywhere from 20 participants to 170, so this artwork only represents a small fraction of hundreds of artworks produced in these programs weekly.

Studies have suggested how important the process of making art is to help the body and the brain manage trauma and stress. When individuals regularly participate in art programs we see remarkable changes beyond improved skills as artists, we see greatly reduced anxiety, a greater ability to focus, increased independence, and an improved sense of self-worth. These changes affect these individuals and improve their interactions with others outside of the studio as well.

This exhibit is an opportunity to experience artwork by artists with disabilities or individuals who face other barriers, to meet some of these artists, and to elevate them as creators of culture who provide new perspectives into our collective human experience. We hope with this exhibition to spur the formation of more programs that fill each individual’s desire for creative expression, and increase the number of creative communities that support, celebrate and circulate the production artwork by individuals who face barriers.

Artwork #1: Sea Bear Stalk

$60.00

Alt Text: The sky is bright orange. A brown bear, with a cream face and spotted brown dots is walking on the beach along the shoreline. The bear’s mouth is wide open, almost like it is smiling and happy with what it sees beyond the left of the canvas. The vivid blue calm water touches up against the picturesque arch-shaped rock in the distance.

Artwork #2: Fremouw Showdown

$64.00

Alt Text: A trio of prehistoric animals are on the beach and in the water. Two are staking their territory while the third is minding its own business cooling off in the water. The animal in the water is looking to the left and seems to be enjoying the view as their gaze goes off the canvas. This prehistoric animal appears to be a squatty dinosaur looking lizard with a gray body and blue stripes. Its twin is in the immediate foreground on the left of the canvas standing on the sand. This dinosaur looking lizard makes his presence known by its wide stance as it gazes directly at the viewer with big orange eyes and mouth wide open with fangs. To its right and in the background, is a yellow and orange striped and spotted tiger with big green eyes. Its stance is wide and is looking directly at the other animal on the sand. The mouth is open showing off all its very sharp and pointed teeth.

The red ghost on the top right of the canvas is hiding behind a large mountain that takes up space on the entire right-hand side. Artwork #1: Psychedelic Abstract Painting 035

Artwork: Sky Bus, Top View

Not For Sale

Alt Text: Sky Bus is a pencil sketch of a space ship with incredible details. Lines curve in and out of each other in this drawing like a well-controlled knot of extension cords. Geometric shapes are drawn stacked atop other geometric shapes where every shape has a place and purpose. The ship that is depicted (if built) would be 2-miles in all directions. Within the symphony of lines, there is intended to be a space-resort, restaurants, lodgings, and a vast labyrinth of transport tubes. The ship would be powered by a warp core and is inspired by an imaginary Star-Trek like universe in the 54th century.

Laurie Penfold, Art from the Heart – Peckham

Artist Bio

When I attend art classes at Peckham, my fellow customer service representatives ask, “Laurie, were you an artist before becoming blind?” My response is, “No, I was never a good artist, and blindness did not improve the situation!” I have enjoyed finding a method to create art. My husband is a legally blind artist, and he has inspired me to try. I’ve been a customer service representative at Peckham for over eight years, and I use a computer screen reader at work. I became legally blind later in life and received extensive training to start a new career.

Kenneth Rosenthal, Creative Expressions Program – Gesher Human Services

Artist Bio

My name is Kenneth. When I was young, my mother was an art teacher and a painter. I developed an early interest in art and various media by watching her. I’ve dabbled in different art forms throughout my life, but nothing stuck until now. I began taking photos in March of 2020. My most recent work is a series of double-exposure photographs, some of which feature altered colors. I choose my photos randomly. That’s when the creative process begins. I wait for the images to talk to me then begin experimenting with color and composition, and eventually I crop the final result in a way that feels good.

Artwork #1: Detroit Lighthouse

$100.00

Alt Text: Detroit Lighthouse is a photo of a lighthouse on the Detroit River. It was daytime when the photo was taken. The sky is green and smooth. It feels unusual, but not unfriendly. The surreal color is more enlightening than eerie. You feel like you can smell the fish in the water below, hear the kids playing in a nearby park, and feel the rumble of a foghorn from a passing freighter. If you could taste the sky in this photo, then it would probably taste like green apples.

Artwork #2: Neighborhood

$100.00

Alt Text: Photograph of trees in my neighborhood that have been digitally altered.

Artwork #3: Detroit Skyscraper

$100.00

Alt Text: Detroit Skyscraper is a photo of the Guardian Building. The photo is taken from the ground so the only other thing in the picture is a bunch of puffy blue clouds surrounded by cotton candy sky. The building feels like a sharp. strong, and robotic structure amongst a bed of sweet, cuddly, and caring pillows. The scene is not natural, but it is welcoming.
